The Superior Mesenteric Artery Occlusion

Abstract
The superior mesenteric artery occlusion is low blood flow state secondary to congestive heart failure, cardiogenic shock, artherosclerosis, prolonged or apparently irreversible post-traumatic shock or other causes.
Most of these patients, because of their serious primary diseases, are not salvageable when mesenteric infarction is recognized or suspected.
A reason for the high mortality rate is that superior mesenteric artery occlusion is usually not recognized early enough to begin adequate treatment.
During past 10 years, 3 cases of superior mesenteric artery occlusion were confirmed by abdominal exploration and treated with surgery.
Only one case was confirmed by selective superior mesenteric artery aortogram, preoperatively.
The operation was resection of the involved ischemic intestine.
Two cases were died and one case was survived.
